Completed in 1913, the
Kirby was built by Busch as an office building. Rooted in retail with
A. Harris &
Co. as the anchor tenant and situated across from Neiman-Marcus, The Kirby has seen a lot
of traffic over the years. |

The Kirby reflects a revival in
Gothic architectural style. While amongst other examples of Gothic resurgence,
including the Houses of Parliament in London (started in 1849) and the nave of
St. John the
Devine in New York (still underway), The Kirby was perhaps the first example of Gothic
architecture utilized in skyscraper form.
|
Utilizing architectural
features such as the pointed arch and rib vault, enabled Gothic structures such as The
Kirby to have higher vaults, such as is typified in its dome-like lobby. |

|
Still preserved in their
original condition, The Kirby's architectural features include terra cotta exterior
friezes, cornices and finials, such as those pictured here.
