| The Kirby Building was originally known
as The Busch Building after beer baron Adolphus Busch, for whom the building was
constructed. Busch died in 1913, the year the building was completed. His heirs sold the
property five years later to the Kirby Investment Company of Houston, led by lumber
magnate John Henry Kirby, a major figure in Texas finance for half a century. The Kirby interests sold the property in 1941, but the building has retained
the Kirby name. In 1980, when the building was entered on the National Register of
Historic Places, it was called the Busch-Kirby Building to reflect its noteworthy owners.
Over the years the building has been known by several names; through
it all, its Gothic beauty has stood the test of time.
